Hover Translate โ Privacy Policy
What the extension does
Hover Translate has a single purpose: when you rest your mouse on text on a web page (or select text), it shows a translation in a small box next to it. When you hover over a price, it shows that amount converted into the currency you chose.
Data the extension handles
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| The text you hover over or select (a word, sentence or paragraph), plus the target language you chose | To translate it | Sent over HTTPS to a translation service: Google Translate (clients5.google.com, translate.googleapis.com) or, as a fallback, MyMemory (api.mymemory.translated.net). It is not sent to us. |
| Exchange rates | To convert prices | The extension downloads a public list of exchange rates from ExchangeRate-API (open.er-api.com) or, as a fallback, jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net). No text from the page and no price you hover over is sent; the conversion is calculated on your device. |
| Your settings (language, currency, reading mode, speaking speed, sites where you turned it off) | To remember your choices | Stored in your browser using chrome.storage. If you have browser sync turned on, your browser syncs them between your own devices. We never receive them. |
What we do not do
- We do not collect or store the pages you visit, your browsing history, or the text you translate.
- We do not add any identifier, account or tracking ID to translation requests.
- We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking in the extension.
- We do not sell or share data with anyone, and we do not use it for anything unrelated to translation and price conversion.
- The extension does not read passwords, form fields or text boxes. It ignores input fields and editable areas.
Third-party services
The translation and exchange-rate services listed above receive the request itself and, as with any web request, your IP address. Their handling of that data is covered by their own privacy policies (Google, MyMemory/Translated, ExchangeRate-API, jsDelivr).
On-device option: in Google Chrome you can choose the "On-device" engine in the settings. When Chrome's built-in translator supports the language pair, the text is translated on your computer and is not sent to a translation service.
Reading aloud: the ๐ and ๐ข buttons use your browser's built-in speech feature. Some browsers offer "online" voices; if you use one, your browser sends the text being read to the browser vendor's speech service.
When the extension runs
The extension runs on the web pages you open so that it can show a translation where your mouse is. It only sends text when you hover over it or select it. You can switch it off for a single site or everywhere from the extension's menu, or use the "hold Alt" mode so it only works while you hold the Alt key.
Children
The extension is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
